Water damage can occur to any of your clothes because of many different ways or reasons. Water damage will not only ruin the strings used to make the garment but if left on for long periods of time, it will ruin the whole item in the form of mold and this can't be removed. This can happen even if there isn't any water nearby. All it takes is a little bit of moisture, and this can occur in places that you don't even know it might be. Most of the time, you will notice it after it is already there as a musty smell.
This can happen in newer homes as well as older homes, even though it happens more often in the older homes because it is already in the walls. If you live in an older home and you have a lot of clothes that are required to be put on hangers, you might want to invest in the enclosed bag style hangers that are made to help with the slowdown of this moisture settling on these clothes. They are also a good idea when you live in a newer home. One other way for this maybe not to occur would be to allow air to be able to go between your clothes.
If you have a lot of sweaters that you won't be wearing for a while, like over the summer months, then you will want to go and maybe do one of these two things. It is best to go through your clothes and if you find some that you know that you won't be wearing ever again, then those pieces need to be rid of. The second thing for the items that you have left should be stored where they won't be able to collect moisture. Totes or vacuum bags are good and will remove the chance of them getting damp. Another way is to have a dehumidifier that you can run at all times. This will help to remove all of this moisture that is in the air in your home and will also help remove the water and moisture that is in your walls and floors.
All of these things will help you keep your clothes in good shape for a longer span of time and will also help if you decide to resell these items at yard sales or give them away to a thrift store.
