If you want to keep a fire out of your home, there are several things that you will need to do and a number of things that need to be checked. The best way is to start at the back of your home and do thorough and complete checks of everything in those rooms from checking all the plug-ins to the switches on the walls. If there are ceiling fans in these rooms, you will need to check them also for frayed wires, bad connections, and loose wires. If they are bad, just remove and replace them. It might be a good idea to replace outdated ones as well.
If you find a bad plug-in, you will need to replace it and if the wall should feel warm to the touch, have someone come into your home and let them find out the problem so it can be fixed right away. After you have checked all the rooms for any problems that might be there, you will need to start checking all of the things that you own like all of your appliances, electronics, lamps, and even all of the little things that have cords that are plugged in all the time.
If you have to use a space heater, make sure that it never gets left on if you are planning to leave the home for any reason. If you don't need it during the day, unplug it because even if the unit isn't on, the electricity is still flowing in the cord and could start a fire. If you use candles at all, make sure that they are totally out as this can start a fire quick. With these two items, you will need to make extra care where they are set so that nothing flammable gets put near them.
If you have a fireplace, you will need to make sure that you have a screen put in front of this so that the fire is not allowed to fly out and onto your floors or clothes if standing too close. Some people are naturally cooler than others, and they might try to stand closer to the heat just to stay warm. As for the kitchen, this is the worst place and the most common place for a fire to get started. So if you are cooking, don't leave pans on the stove that could catch on fire. If you are called away from the stove, take the pan or pot off the flame and shut it off.
