Regan is a local small business owner in the Midwestern United States. She works long hours trying to promote and market her business. She has two employees. She sometimes stays at her business long after the other employees are gone. She lives about 20 miles from her business.
Her drive home is on a lonely stretch of highway. There are few businesses or traffic on that road. She has a mechanically sound vehicle. She does not mind the drive, because it gives her time to think. Some of her best ideas have come during the drive to and from work.
One night she was closing the store for the evening. She noticed a car parked around the corner from her business. The driver seemed like he was watching someone. She did not think much of it, because the car soon pulled off.
On her way home, she saw the same car in her rear view mirror. She thought it was suspicious and was about to report it. Then she saw a flashing blue light. She thought oh, an unmarked police car. He must be chasing somebody. The Driver of the car was a young looking male.
It soon became obvious that he was after her. She thought, I wonder what I did. Something must be wrong with my car. The driver pulled up beside her and motioned her to pull over. She pulled over and the driver pulled behind her. He sat there for a minute as if he was checking something.
Regan had seen this before and it all looked legitimate. The driver got out of his car and walked towards Regans car. He said this car fits the description of a car in a robbery today, do you mind getting out of the vehicle? Regan was getting suspicious. She did not hear anything about a robbery.
She thought, I saw this guy earlier. She wondered why he did not stop her then. Her intuition told her something was wrong. She said, do you mind if I see your Identification. The guy became irate and said, get out of the vehicle now. Regan was in a difficult position.
If this guy was legitimate, she might go to jail for resisting a police officer. If he was not, she might be hurt or worst. She decided she was not going to take any chance. She quickly started her car and sped off. She got on her cell phone and called the police station and told them what had happened.
Her fears were confirmed. They knew nothing of a robbery or the officer she described. When she got home the real police came to her house and got details of the incident. They put out an all points bulletin on the guy and the car. He was picked up a few hours later.
The police found the flashing blue light and other police equipment in his car. He was arrested for impersonating a police officer and other charges. People are not always who they pretend to be. Criminals use the cover of emergency personnel to commit crimes. know the warning signs and do not ignore your intuition. Emergency personnel should be clearly identified. Have a self defense strategy in mind if things go wrong.
